Keynote Speaker Dr Shereen Fouad: “Responsible AI in Chest Diseases: From Innovation to Trustworthy Clinical Decision-Making”

Abstract

Chest imaging offers major opportunities for clinical AI, but high benchmark accuracy alone does not ensure safe use in practice. This keynote explores responsible AI across pneumonia, COVID-19, and lung cancer, arguing that trustworthiness rests on three conditions: robust performance testing under real-world image variation; explainability designed with clinicians and embedded in workflow; and governance spanning regulatory alignment, lifecycle monitoring and an AI-literate workforce. Drawing on work in explainable AI and medical imaging with NHS partners, the talk examines equity, accountability and meaningful human oversight. Its central message is that trustworthy clinical AI is built through evidence, co-design and workforce capability and not accuracy figures alone.

Curriculum Vitae

Dr Shereen Fouad is a Senior Lecturer in Applied AI and Robotics at Aston University, where she leads the MSc AI for Health programme and serves as Healthcare and Partnerships Lead at the Aston Centre for Applied AI and Robotics. Her research spans medical imaging analysis, explainable AI and responsible AI adoption in healthcare, delivered through long-standing collaborations with NHS trusts. She is an expert member of the British Standards Institution and ISO, contributing to standards for AI in medical devices and post-market surveillance, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
